It has been cold in Seattle recently. Well, at least what passes for cold for in Seattle. So I have been wearing two coats, both old and both made in America. The first is a Holloway Original College Jacket, a wool letterman’s type jacket. It is my warmest jacket and is eighteen years old. My sister Amanda got it for me when she attended the 1993 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship game in New Orleans, Louisiana. North Carolina won the title that year 77-71 after Chris Weber forgot how many time outs Michigan had left and was whistled for a technical foul.
The other coat I have been wearing is a Patagonia shell jacket. It is still going strong after fifteen years. It kind of looks like the Patagonia Men’s Solar Wind Jacket which Patagonia sells for $249.00. The big difference between these two jackets is that Patagonia made my jacket in the U.S. while Patagonia now makes the Solar Wind Jacket in Vietnam. In fact most of Patagonia’s jackets are made overseas, just like North Face’s jackets and Columbia’s jackets. However, there is still an American manufacturer who makes all its jackets in this country; that manufacturer is King Louie.
King Louie produces a wide range of jackets. The jacket they produce that is closest to my Patagonia is the Voyage. It, like all King Louie jackets, is available through All USA Clothing for the screaming deal of $56.99. $56.99 for a jacket made in this country with union labor! Mike Lerner is currently at the helm of King Louie. King Louie employs roughly 170 union workers to make their products in Baxter Springs Kansas.
In the late 1860s, Baxter Springs became one of the first “cow towns” in Kansas as a result of thousands of cattle from Texas moseying on through on their way to northern markets. Today 4200 people live in Baxter Springs; the population of cattle is unknown. Baxter Springs is also famous because part of the historic U.S. Route 66 passes through Baxter Springs downtown main street. Famous golfer Hale Irwin also hails from Baxter Springs.
But the most famous thing from Baxter Springs are the wonderful clothes made there by the King Louie company. Please visit their website and have a look at all the wonderful clothing they make. Then go buy some at All USA Clothing. You will get a great jacket, pullover, sweater or other product, and you will have the satisfaction of knowing that your garment was crafted by a member of your extended American family living in Baxter Springs.
