No house should be without one!

I can live without a reading room.

I can live without a music room.

I might even, if forced, live without a tv room.  But I could never live without a bathroom in my house.

And while billions of people on this planet live without indoor plumbing, virtually no Americans need venture outdoors when nature calls.  And thankfully, we can equip our indoor bathrooms with fixtures made by members of our extended American family.  In our house, every fixture is made by a wonderful firm located in Kohler, Wisconsin.  The company is, as you might have guessed, Kohler.

John Michael Kohler founded the company that bears his name in 1873; Kohler was an immigrant from Austria.  Kohler’s early fame came from inventing the “Bubbler” in 1888.  Most of us know the Bubbler as a drinking fountain.  When I was visiting Allen Edmonds in Wisconsin, I asked to use the bathroom and was told that it was just past the Bubbler, on the right.  I looked down the hallway and all I saw was a drinking fountain.  As a result I almost walked into the stockroom.

Our house was built in 1922, so we wanted a rather traditional look for our bathroom fixtures.  We went with the Memoirs collection; Kohler offers 13 different collections that have matching toilets, sinks, faucets and what have you.  I think our Memoirs faucets are really cool in brushed nickel.

If you want a more contemporary look, I would recommend the Reve collection.  How about that for a toilet?

Before you are even thinking about remodeling your bathroom, please visit the Kohler bathroom planning page; it has all sorts of great tools to help you end up with the coolest bathroom on the planet.

What happens if you don’t need to replace everything in the bathroom, but only have to get a new toilet seat cover?  Are you going to have to kowtow to boyos from the Middle Kingdom?  Hardly.  Another fine American firm will be able to supply you with a replacement toilet seat pronto.  Bemis Manufacturing Company is located at 300 Mill Street in Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin and has a wide range of seats manufactured by members of our extended American family from the Badger State.

A few weeks ago, the fill valve in my ten-year old Kohler toilet finally gave up the ghost.  Happily, my local hardware store stocks Korky toilet repair products.  I put in my replacement Korky fill valve in about 10 minutes and it works like a charm.

Korky makes replacement fill valves, flappers

flush valves,

and stylish plungers

at their plant in Burlington, Wisconsin.

I think the message is clear:  If you need anything related to your bathroom, you need look no further than Wisconsin.  In fact, if you need shoes, appliances, socks and gardening tools, there are Badgers making them for you.  What a resourceful state!
